Six months ago, the Global Wetlands Project team won a Microsoft AI for Earth Grant for US $10,000. The grant was awarded to continue the development of our smart remote monitoring tool FishID. We are using FishID to analyse fish monitoring datasets from eastern Australia automatically.
FishID is an artificial intelligence platform that can automatically detect and classify fish species from underwater footage.
Currently, we are working with the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre to automatically analyse their 1.6 TB of fish underwater data collected through multiple years in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia.
The past six months, the team has developed and tested several key tools that would allow us to process large quantities of video data. These include:
1) Server networks - for rapid processing
2) Optimised data storage
3) Efficient video clipping
As of May 2020, we have now over 17,000 manual annotations of different fish species and the testing of our model has begun.
