Bio

I am a Data Scientist at the Australian Rivers Institute working on automatic environmental monitoring of coastal seascapes. I enjoy the applications of data science methods for marine science research. Learn more about my work by checking out my current projects and past publications.

Automatic tracking of fish for ecology

February 11, 2019 - February 14, 2022

In aquatic environments, constantly changing environmental conditions limit the capacities of traditional protocols to measure animal movement.  Technological and methodological advancements are required to enhance animal movement data collection. In my PhD, I apply novel techniques (Artificial Intelligence) to complement marine animal movement data collection. I am developing automatic object detection and object tracking to measure fish movement from underwater footage.

3D-technology to study invertebrate populations

August 20, 2017 - November 02, 2018

Coastal alterations such as the construction of seawalls have cumulative effects on ecologically and commercially valuable marine animal species. My project used unmanned aerial vehicles (i.e drones) to create digital 3D rocky shore reconstructions to study species-habitat associations with previously unavailable components of shore complexity and contrasted against the traditional rugosity index.

Metabolic requirements and diet of a common Indo-Pacific mangrove crab

July 1, 2016 - May 31, 2017

Metopograpsus frontalis is an abundant and common mangrove crab of the Indo-Pacific. My research documented the metabolic demands and dietary preferences (algae vs oysters) of these crabs. I studied the ecological impact the crabs' oyster consumption has on estuarine food webs. I found that the crabs' diet is algae-based and oyster consumption in an opportunistic behaviour with low impact on food webs.
